Alison, Jane and Mary Ann Caws, The Surreal House
Alison, Jane and Mary Ann Caws
The Surreal House
New Haven / London, Barbican Art Gallery / Yale University Press, 2010. Hardcover. grey boards w/ illustration & silver quarter cloth; black printing. blue & illustrated pastedowns & flyleafs. 347 pgs w/ color & bw illustrations. Through a unique blend of art, photography, film, and architecture, The Surreal House presents the individual dwelling as a place of mystery and wonder. Fusing house and dream, it probes the relationship between interior and shell, object and space, and it elaborates "the marvelous" and "compulsive beauty" as espoused by André Breton. The haunted house, the cabinet of curiosities, the ruined castle, the cage, the cave, the box, the labyrinth, the bell jar, and the womb are among the uniquely surreal habitats explored. Shaped by the irrational and the subversive, the flip side of the modernist paradigm of the functional, rational dwelling, The Surreal House is ripe for discovery. Mirroring the surrealist love of poetic juxtaposition, the project brings together works by artists such as Edward Hopper, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio de Chirico, Man Ray, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joseph Cornell, and Salvador Dalí. A surreal legacy is to be found in the interiors of little-known Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino, in Frederick Kiesler's model for "The Endless House" (1957-59), in sculptures by Louise Bourgeois and Rebecca Horn, and in installations by Edward Kienholz and Ilya Kabakov. Contemporary architecture is represented by the work of Rem Koolhaas and Diller & Scofidio, among others.--Amazon. VG. covers have light shelf & edge-wear; back cover scuffed & marked w/ light spots of soiling. pgs lightly edge-toned w/ ink ghosting from opposing pgs/illustration; otherwise, clean.

Lucey, Conor, The Stapleton Collection: Designs for the Irish Neoclassical Interior
Lucey, Conor
The Stapleton Collection: Designs for the Irish Neoclassical Interior
Tralee, Ireland, Churchhill House Press, 2007. Hardcover. light blue cloth boards. 349 pgs w/ illustrations. pictorial dustjacket. Michael Stapleton (1747-1801) was the most skilled stuccodor working in the neoclassical or ‘Adam' style that dominated Dublin interior decoration in the final decades of the eighteenth century. Although the astonishing quality and variety of Dublin's eighteenth-century decorative plasterwork has long been celebrated, this is the first full length exploration of Stapleton's work. It publishes for the first time the remarkable collection of drawings from his workshop which are held at the National Library of Ireland. Conor Lucey's study of Stapleton's career presents new research drawn from a broad range of sources and examines the collection of designs within the broader context of neoclassical stuccowork in Dublin, considering it as evidence for the late eighteenth-century plastering trade in general. Working outside of the established guilds, by virtue of his Catholic faith, Stapleton created one of the most successful decorating and house-building practices in Dublin of the period and designs for many of the city's most notable late eighteenth-century interiors are included here, including studies for Trinity College, Belvedere House and Powerscourt House. Over the years Stapleton's name has been erroneously attached to many Irish interiors with which he had no involvement. This important publication attempts to define more closely the nature of his decorative neoclassicism, and establish his oeuvre more accurately. More generally, its offers a fascinating account of the many forces at play in how the Irish Georgian interior was created.---Amazon.com. New/Sealed .

Mowl, Timothy and Brian Earnshaw, Insular Rococo: Architecture, Politics, and Society in Ireland and England 1710-1770
Mowl, Timothy and Brian Earnshaw
Insular Rococo: Architecture, Politics, and Society in Ireland and England 1710-1770
London, England, Reaktion, 1999. Hardcover. olive cloth boards w/ gilt spine printing. 358 pgs w/ bw & color illustrations. pictorial dustjacket w/ white printing. "Between 1710 and 1770, the Rococo style should, in the normal course of events, have been Britain's prevailing decorative style, at once inventive, ornate, elegant and playful. This is the first book to describe and explain its oddly frustrated course in England and, in vivid contrast, its brilliant flourishing in Ireland. Architectural historians have tried to make the best of the Palladian Revival that occurred after 1714. But in fact Palladianism was a cultural disaster, a retrograde step imposed upon a chauvinistic ruling class which left England dependent for the internal decor of its aristocratic houses on memories of ruined Roman baths or the improvisations of itinerant Italo-Swiss stucco workers. England's eventual response to the decorative failings of Palladianism was the 'Gothick'. Ireland, more sophisticated in the technical education of its craftsmen and artists, not only devised its own subtle 'insular' Rococo, but exported this mode successfully to the West of England in a gesture of cultural colonialism."--Jacket. Neils, Jenifer, The Parthenon Frieze
Neils, Jenifer
The Parthenon Frieze
Cambridge / New York, Cambridge University Press, 2001. Softcover. illustrated & burnt orange glossy wrappers w/ white printing. 294 pgs w/ bw illustratons. sealed CD to back cover pastedown. "The Parthenon frieze, one of Western civilization's major monuments, has been the subject of intense study for over two hundred years. Most scholarship has sought an overall interpretation of the monument's iconography and therefore neglects the visual language of the sculpture, an essential tool for a full understanding of the narrative. Dr. Jenifer Neils's study provides an in-depth examination of the frieze that decodes its visual language but also analyzes its conception and design, style and content, and impact on the visual arts over time. Unique in its wide-ranging approach, The Parthenon Frieze also brings ethical reasoning to bear on the issue of repatriation as part of the ongoing debate on the Elgin Marbles."--Jacket.
